I picked two surf images for these posters, one a lineup of Rincon, California and the other a lineup from Southeastern Taiwan. I took both of them with a Hasselblad Xpan panoramic film camera. They are signed and numbered, with a limited edition of 100.

Santa Barbara is having a really poor winter for surf, the worst I’ve ever seen. But the weather has been nice so last week (sorry, film) I went up onto the ridge and took some shots with my pano camera. It was so clear you could see most of the Channel Islands perfectly-Santa Barbara, Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel and Santa Catalina as well as San Nicolas (which is rarely seen from the mainland) (San Clemente was hidden behind Catalina).

Singer/songwriter (Little Wings), artist and surfer Kyle Field has been living down the street from me. I called him the other day and asked him what he was up to. He said “I’m just cutting out some little people”. I had to see exactly what he meant. Here’s a portrait I took of him and some shots of his little people which he had drawn then cut out and stuck on wine corks. They were headed to a solo exhibit at a gallery in Paris. Kyle’s art is great…and he gives each piece really funny names like “David Galiathon” and “Coo-Coo Birds (the ticket to get daddy out of crazy town)”. In early December a big swell hit Santa Barbara and the entire state decided to come here for a surf. Sandspit was too crowded and inconsistent. I thought that the bottom of the cove at Rincon was the best spot on this swell. This was the first real swell of the year so all of the sand that had built up over summer was still intact. People were kicking out of waves that would double up and reform into big sandy barrels. It reminded me of groyne Kirra in Australia before the Super Bank. Richard Kenvin came up from San Diego with a couple of his Simms fishes. They are designed after the original Bob Simmons twin fin that he made in the ’50’s. He is working on a film called Hydrodynamica which details Simmons history and the evolution of the fish design. Here’s a couple shots of me on the Sims fish. Both shots are of the same wave.
